Aboard a safari truck, you leave Bayahibe for a day filled with discoveries: colorful markets, artisan cigar workshops, sugar-cane fields, a traditional Dominican lunch in nature and a relaxing cruise on the legendary Chavón River. It is the perfect mix of culture, nature and local encounters, enjoyed in a small group to keep every moment authentic.
Your first stop is Higüey, a lively regional town famous for its bustling local market. Here, there is nothing staged for tourists — this is real Dominican life in all its energy and authenticity. You’ll walk through aisles filled with exotic fruits, vegetables, spices, meats and household goods while observing the rhythm of local commerce. The atmosphere is vibrant, colorful and full of smiles. It’s also a great opportunity to buy authentic Dominican products such as coffee, cocoa, spices or handmade souvenirs.
Next, you visit a small family-run cigar workshop. In a friendly atmosphere, artisans demonstrate how cigars are made by hand, from selecting the tobacco leaves to the final rolling process. Your guide explains the importance of cigars in Dominican culture and economy, and those interested can even try one. It’s an authentic cultural moment that highlights the craftsmanship passed down through generations.
The safari truck continues through vast sugar-cane plantations. You stop at the weighing station where freshly harvested cane is processed, and taste fresh sugar cane cut directly with a machete. This moment is both educational and delicious, offering insight into one of the country’s most important agricultural traditions. The contrast between endless green fields and blue skies creates unforgettable scenery.
At lunchtime, you stop in a lush natural setting by the river. A traditional Dominican lunch is served: chicken, fish, rice, cassava fritters, beans, salads and tropical fruits depending on the season. Surrounded by jungle and peaceful nature, this meal becomes one of the highlights of the day — simple, authentic and deeply relaxing.
In the afternoon, enjoy a peaceful cruise along the famous Chavón River, known worldwide for its breathtaking scenery and appearances in Hollywood movies. Surrounded by cliffs and tropical vegetation, you glide through calm waters while admiring one of the Dominican Republic’s most beautiful landscapes. A swimming stop is included, and adventurous travelers can swing into the river using the fun “Tarzan rope”.
